La Chasse

(The Hunt) Book not yet available in English

Summary:

As his freshman year comes to an end and summer sets in, Max, who has always struggled with a feeling of invisibility that eats away at his family, friendship, and romantic relationships, finds himself in an empty house. The house across the street, however, is full of life: Ellie and Cosme, a couple whose love is as radiant as they are, are spending their vacation there and invite Max to joint them. Thus begins a dangerous love triangle in which Max, more visible than ever, tentatively explores his desires – even if it means stumbling violently at times.

Comment:

The decision to never reveal the narrator’s gender is elegantly executed and invites readers to confront their preconceptions about gender and sexuality. The desires and sexuality of LGBTI+ teenagers are portrayed without embellishment, and the novel tackles a wide range of themes, from non-exclusive romantic relationships to failing parents and violence in teenage couples, without resorting to clichés or didacticism. One regret, however, is that the very fast pace does not allow for much depth in the characters.
