A story that was originally passed down from mouth to mouth eventually found resonance with a group of Slovenian artists. The Albanian folk tale was adapted for storytelling by Špela Frlic, one of Slovenia’s most notable storytellers. It also inspired Izar Lunaček, comics artist and ambassador of the medium, who crafted the script, while the young artist Dora Benčevič brought it to life in her signature style. The result is a comic that weaves together folk elements with strikingly expressive, energetic drawings. It is a story of growing up, of (female) emancipation, fear, and freedom, which can be read as an exciting adventure or a reflection and commentary on the modern world and on the relationships between generations and genders. Once upon a time, tucked away in the remote mountains, there lived a father with three daughters … We think we know how such stories go. But do we really? The book has received the Golden Pear Quality Badge.
