Das Zebra unterm Bett

(The zebra under the bed) Book not yet available in English

Summary:

One morning, Hanna finds a zebra under her bed. A real, live zebra! Just like that. Hanna has just moved to the area with her two dads, she thinks that Bräuninger, the zebra, … should go to school with her. A zebra in class? Impossible! But since Bräuninger is good at writing, arithmetic and doing gymnastics, he can stay – at least for the time being. This is a school day the children will never forget: learning to write on Bräuninger’s stripes! Leapfrogging over his back! This is their dream class! But suddenly, the door opens: two zookeepers appear and take Bräuninger away. What should Hanna do now? [Source: publisher]

Comment:

Markus Orths explains strangeness and otherness in a witty and profound manner. The fact that Hanna grows up with her “homosensational” fathers is discussed in a wonderfully calm way. Kerstin Meyer marvellously captured the moods of the characters in her illustrations. [Source: publisher]
