Va te changer !

(Go get changed !) Book not yet available in English

Summary:

Robin decides to put on a skirt for high school one day. He is not particularly trying to make a political statement, he just wants to wear something that looks nice and feels comfortable. But the other pupils jeer and hurl homophobic, sexist insults, not just at Robin, but also his girlfriend Jade and his best friend Selim. Nor do the school staff understand: Robin’s sister Maia, who works at the school, forces him to change. The trio are bullied more and more aggressively, until Selim pays a heavy price…

Comment:

A brief work that neatly skewers the absurdity of gendered clothing: what Robin sees as a minor decision on what to wear that day quickly becomes a huge issue. The three main characters are complex yet endearing, particularly Jade, a young woman with a forceful personality who readily steps in when her friends come under attack. The danger of groupthink and intolerance are clearly foregrounded in an oral style that packs quite a punch: the story is intended to be read aloud and was performed in nine Dordogne middle schools in 2018.
