Summary:
Romy the butcher’s daughter is a forthright young woman growing up in a family of men. Julius is a gentle, dreamy vegetarian whose family recently moved from the city to the countryside. Their village is divided into two camps – long-term residents vs. incomers, private vs. state school, “carnivores” vs. “hipster vegans”. Romy and Julius are on opposite sides, but their shared passion for theatre leads to a tender love story that breaks down the divide and brings the two camps closer together.

The dual-authored book is a retelling of Romeo and Juliet from the viewpoint of various characters. The novel is divided into acts, with a chorus of villagers summing up the action in verse. The shifts in perspective give the narrative pace and rhythm and encourage readers to step back and think about the characters’ opinions and acts for themselves. A witty, heartfelt, refreshing twist on Shakespeare’s play, exploring issues of femininity and masculinity, life (and food) choices, love, and of course theatre.
