Elvis Škorc, genialni štor

(Elvis Stork, a Genius Klutz) Book not yet available in English

Summary:

Elvis is out of luck. His dad’s favourite pastime is going to the gym, his mother is in her grumpy phase, and his grandmother is always on her rollerblades. His younger sister Ela’s pockets are filled to the brim with bugs and spiders, and his neighbour is so hot Elvis gets a suntan just by looking at her. Elvis is a genius, an inventor, a babysitter, and a lover boy, even if he doesn’t stand a chance with girls, his inventions are useless, and babies have to look after themselves in his care. On the other hand, he has a great comic book collection and a friend with whom he can be silent. Things get out of hand when his mother makes a big announcement that turns his life upside down. Comment:

After a long hiatus, Janja Vidmar returns with another young adult novel, but this time it is a little different from her previous works. It is not a problem novel for young readers, but a light-hearted, unencumbered, easy-to-read text for and about teenagers, peppered with both situational and linguistic humour. While the novel does address various problems a teenager might face, they are not dire, radical, or fatal. They are quite ordinary. Hence, Elvis Stork, a Genius Klutz brings us a snapshot of a time that is just a bit more dynamic than usual for young Elvis. The author offers readers an entertaining, lively, sometimes even slightly tense, and always amusing read about a teenager with more or less problematic classmates and with daydreams about an incredibly questionable girl. (source: publisher) The kaleidoscope of emotions, the juicy dialogues, all the situations of embarrassment, and the incredible linguistic tricks place this “Slovenian Adrian Mole” amongst the top original Slovenian works for young readers. With a fair amount of self-irony, humour, and unimaginable versatility, and through her recognizable style, the author masterfully immortalizes the modern teenage experience. Her work will win over even the most disinterested readers. The book has received the Golden Pear Mark of Quality.
