(Alternative Punishment) Book not yet available in English

Summary:

Solange has thought up a strategy to live through her high school years attracting as little attention as possible. But then Petrček, the gym teacher, catches her with a doobie in hand and things take a turn for the worse. Nina, her best friend, refuses to pick up the phone. The biology teacher accuses her of cheating, which is absurd if you’ve failed anyway. All the same daddy keeps on dreaming of his little princess going to med school. To top it all off, the school board decides to give her an alternative punishment: Solange is to care for a feeble old lady recovering from surgery. (source: publisher)

Comment:

Solange is a teenager who likes to have fun and doesn’t care all that much for school. But then she gets slapped with an “alternative punishmen” and has to visit Amelija, an aged lady with whom she forms a bond of friendship. The book offers a heart-warming description of help and solidarity between and within generations. Solange is a free-thinking girl refusing to yield to social norms about what one can or cannot do. The book is targeted at the age range 14+, but it is also suitable for younger readers who are capable of critical independent reading.
