The picture book looks at gender equality and how the workload is shared between males and females. At Charlotte’s urging, the hens push for recognition of the work they do all day and demand the male chickens do their fair share. After a series of strikes and demonstrations, they achieve their aims. French chicken puns and the use of strike terminology make it a fun read. The book concludes with a final pun on “when hens have teeth” – the equivalent of “pigs might fly” – as Charlotte discovers that she has indeed grown a tooth!
