Ice in the jungle
Summary:
When the protagonist’s mother gets a new job, she has to leave her home in the snow to move to the jungle. Everything is different, and the protagonist does not like anything about her new home, until her friends make a very special effort to help her settle in.

Comment:
Gender concerns are not explicitly to the forefront of the book. However, it is interesting that the action focuses on the protagonist, a girl, and her mother, as female animals tend to occur less frequently in children’s books, where animals are often male by default even if not explicitly gendered as male. The main character is not typically “female” and the other animals appear gender neutral. The focus is instead on the protagonist’s feelings of difference and loneliness, alleviated by the actions of her new friends by the book’s conclusion.
