Edie

Summary:

The protagonist is a very helpful young girl. She helps her family by waking them with loud noises in the morning, and helping her father find all the things he needs in the shop. Sometimes, Edie thinks she might need to be less helpful!

Comment:

The protagonist is another exuberant girl character who is not afraid to follow her own path and do things her own way. Her efforts at helping cause chaos and comic situations, and the book subverts the idea of the helpful, model girl child found in many books for children. Though the protagonist’s behaviour often oversteps boundaries, she is not cowed into submission or taught to be more obedient, but rather learns from her own reflection what behaviour might be best.
