Comment:
This book is interesting from a gender perspective as it centres on an atypical boy character and presents this boy that is considered “different” as an interesting figure. The boy’s ‘difference’ leads to adventure and fun. The book’s domestic setting also does not appear to be “typical”: there is no mother-figure or cosy domesticity, as his father appears aloof and distracted. The story’s ending, where the father’s unusual pet is revealed, shows the two as understanding each other and alike in their “difference.”
