Saison des roses

(Rose Season) Book not yet available in English

Summary:

In a Parisian suburb, a group of girls are part of the local football team. Their captain, Barbara, is a passionate young girl whose reason for living is football. The club also has another team, made up of boys. Everything changes when the girls’ team is ousted in favour of the boys’ team for financial reasons. Only the boys will be able to compete in the championship! Barbara and her friends are furious and decide to fight back by proving their superiority in the game.

Comment:

A quasi-autobiographical account by Chloé Wary that recounts these girls’ struggles, their daily lives, and their existence in the suburbs. Above all, it is a beautiful portrait of young Barbara and her desire for emancipation, enhanced by dialogue featuring the coded expressions of suburban youth and delicate, brightly coloured yet expressive illustrations that bring these vibrant characters to life. A beautiful slice of life that does you good. (Presentation and commentary by Annabel Peltier-Lanchec published in September 2019 in La Revue des livres pour enfants)
