When people look at George, they think they see a boy. But she knows she’s not a boy. She knows she’s a girl. George thinks she’ll have to keep this a secret forever. Then her teacher announces that their class play is going to be Charlotte’s Web. George really, really, really wants to play Charlotte. But the teacher says she can’t even try out for the part… because she’s a boy.

Written by transgender author Alex Gino who is extremely active in the LGBTQ+ community, George is a sensitive and much-needed story about a girl who biologically was born as a boy. The story follows Melissa, a transgender fourth grader, in school and at home, covering everything from theater to school bullies to her relationship with her best friend Kelly, and explores with empathy her isolation and frustration at not being seen for the girl she is.
