(Neither a girl nor a boy) Book not yet available in English

Summary:

The school year is ending, kids can’t wait for the holidays, but Lukáš is afraid he will be alone. In class, everyone belongs to a group—the girls are starting to wear makeup and the boys are playing video games, but Lukáš doesn’t fit in anywhere. One day, he takes something that doesn’t properly belong to him and awakens new feelings within himself. He discovers that there are people in the world who don’t feel like they are either men or women, and he decides to investigate their lives. From the original inhabitants of America to India and Albania, Lukáš begins to understand how magical the world is. One of the best illustrators explores a theme close to his heart in this children’s book.

Comment:

” This comic book about Lukáš, a student who feels neither male nor female, is the first original Czech children’s book with a non-binary main character. Through the personal story of a teenager who doesn’t fit in at school and feels alone, the author explores themes of discovering non-binarity and exploring one’s gender. Through powerful illustrations and introspective storytelling, readers learn how people who don’t fit into society’s binary system feel and what they experience. At the same time, they learn a lot about the history of trans* and non-binary people in societies around the world.”
