Můj medvěd Flóra

(My bear Flora) Book not yet available in English

Summary:

More than thirty years have passed since the first edition of Daisy Mrázková’s book My Bear Flora was published. The story of a found abandoned teddy bear – one of the first Czech picture books for beginning readers – has become legendary. Daisy Mrázková’s books are popular not only in the Czech Republic, but also in Japan, for example, thanks to their delicacy and colorfulness. My Bear Flora is a classic in the Czech Republic for children aged 4 to 6. A poor, damaged teddy bear is lying in the snow on the street. Will anyone pick him up? Yes, they will. They’ll clean him, wash him, and give him new clothes…

Comment:

The picture book My Bear Flora by Daisy Mrázková shows readers the importance of accepting and caring for someone in need. Flora, a stuffed bear, is rescued and revived by children who begin to care for her, wash her, give her new clothes, but most importantly, offer her a place where she can feel accepted and loved, despite her differences from typical teddy bears. The book, which is primarily intended for early readers, uses illustrations and simple, concise text to address the topic of trauma and powerfully depicts both the difficulty of Flora’s situation and the need to treat her trauma, accept her into the community without prejudice toward her difference, and create a place she can call home.
