Marsmädchen

(Martian girl) Book not yet available in English

Summary:

Mirjam is fifteen. Sometimes she feels comfortable the way she is. But other times, she just wants to run away from so much of herself. If only she could be like Laura, who is new in her class and seems to know exactly what she wants. When Mirjam and Laura become friends, Mirjam soon notices that she would like Laura all to herself. But Laura hangs out more often with Philipp – are he and Laura really just “good friends”? Tamara Bach’s debut novel was awarded the Oldenburg Children’s and Young People’s Book Prize.

Comment:

The novel encourages self-exploration and identity development in adolescent readers. This coming-of-age story describes the problems of puberty in general (who am I? what do I want?) and in particular how to deal with sexuality and homosexuality. The author presents these issues through simple and accessible images.
