Twenty-two portraits of literary heroines – from Emma Bovary to Jane Eyre, from Lady Chatterley to Anna Karenina, from Jo to Pippi Longstocking, up to the very modern Matilda by Roald Dahl or Mina by David Almond – who have in common the characteristic of breaking out of the patterns of their own society. The illustrations are stylistically diversified according to protagonists’ characters. The author dedicates an evocative passage to each heroine, through which she shares with her young readers the emotions and themes that the character carries within, like a door that opens onto ever new worlds and dreams. This book by Beatrice Masini is an interesting invitation to read some of the great classics of world literature of all times, whose protagonists are brave and unconventional women or girls, but, above all, free and faithful to their most essential desires. The author engages in a dialogue with each of them, highlighting their uniqueness and value. Each is associated with a face: Fabian Negrin’s illustrations portray the intimate feelings of each one. Then follows, for each woman we are introduced to, a particularly significant quotation taken from the work in which it is possible to meet her, the title and date of edition of which are provided, together with a brief but significant mention of the author who has projected a part of herself into each of these exemplary female figures.
