Summary:
A coming-of-age story that highlights, with clarity and subtle humour, the distress children unfortunately all too often experience when families fall apart. Author Vinko Moederndorfer’s skilful language takes us on a journey from one surprising twist to another, creating vivid images of life in modern society, with multiple allusions to modern pop culture. Soon to be 12 years old, Gašper spends most of his free time on the Internet, expanding his vocabulary by exploring unfamiliar words. He has one best friend and a crush, who prefers hanging out with him over skype rather than in person. In short, his life appears to be just fine. But one day, things at home begin to change. The first-person narrator in Moederndorfer’s novel for young people is the almost 12-year-old Gašper. This sensitive boy with a wild imagination, the complete opposite of the stereotypical male characters, is in distress. He senses that the relationship between his mother and father is in crisis, and to make matters worse, he and his friend Marko are victims of school bullying. As we can see, the novel is written in a problem-oriented way, but all serious problems are tackled in a light and humorous way. After Gašper’s mother moves away, his father takes his son to live in the country with Maks, who turns out to be the boy’s real father. This discovery initially throws Gašper off course, but he is soon able to see the situation more clearly. A highly readable work, brought together even more by the imaginative vignettes authored by Damijan Stepančič at the beginning of each chapter. The work has won the following awards: The Blue Bird Award, the Večernica Award, the Desetnica Award, as well as the Golden Pear Mark of Quality.
