Summary:
A girl who is sick to the back teeth of pink and prefers black refuses to have other people’s tastes forced on her. She compares herself with Auguste, who sews little outfits for his boy dolls, and Carl, a sensitive boy who paints flowers on his cars.

The book, with beautiful illustrations by Ilya Green, starts with a little girl telling the reader “I like black” and “I’m sick to my back teeth of pink!”, reminding us that, stereotypically, pink is for girls. But the girl in the story prefers climbing trees and watching cranes on building sites, which people tell her are for boys. The book also shows us Auguste and Carl, who enjoy sewing clothes for their dolls and painting flowers and ladybirds and are described as sensitive. Throughout the book, the girl argues against the idea that there are things for boys and things for girls. Everyone is allowed to do whatever they want and still be a “proper” boy or a “proper” girl.
