A witty, interesting, richly detailed picture book that references Alice in Wonderland. What is life like for the White Rabbit’s wife? What happens at home when he is not there? Mrs. White Rabbit is a housewife. From morning till night, she looks after the house, her somewhat capricious children, and her constantly late husband who never notices anything she does. She keeps a diary about what is now known as the mental load – the fact that she has to keep track of everything. One day, Mr. White Rabbit reads her diary. He suddenly sees everything he was blind to and hurries to make her a birthday cake. The book concludes with a contrite-looking Mr. Rabbit and children looking out at the reader (or Mrs. Rabbit). Some will see it as a new start for the family, who now understand how much they owe to their mother and will make some effort. More cynical readers wonder whether it will really last past the birthday celebration, or will their efforts deflate like an undercooked cake?
