The story is told from Max’s viewpoint and follows his thinking as it develops step by step from a simplistic, sexist vision of the relationship between boys and girls to a more positive vision of differences and individualities. The story is suitable for very young beginning readers, with a simple, funny text and sharply observed illustrations.
