Summary:
Every Little Kindness, also known as Where are you? is a of call for mutual connection. It highlights the power of simple actions through which we can set an example for others. We can improve our life together by helping one another and by being kind and respectful, realizing in the process that we are not alone. The title of the book partly reflects the content of the story (a dog gets lost and a girl searches for it throughout the city), but it is also a question directed at us — where do we stand as human beings? The wordless picture book invites children and parents or other adults on an exciting imaginary journey, where everyone can practice attentive observation and, along the way, create their own story about the events and characters. Aimed at school-aged children, this picture book received special recognition as an outstanding wordless picture book in the 2018 Kristina Brenkova Award for Original Slovenian Picture Books. Originally created as a master’s thesis at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, it was titled Actions Speak, Pay It Forward, perfectly capturing the structure of this wordless story. In comic-strip–style sequences, a series of good deeds is carried out by seemingly random individuals, each unaware that they are, in fact, part of an ultimately successful search for a lost puppy. The rich, fully realized illustrations, brimming with intricate detail, shine with a refined and harmonious sepia-toned palette, enlivened by lively splashes of red. They invite attentive readers to revisit the story again and again, prompting reflection on meaningful human connections and the discovery of ever-new hidden layers and interpretations. The book has been selected for White Ravens, an annual selection of children’s and youth literature from around the world by the International Youth Library in Munich and has received numerous accolades, including the Ezra Jack Keats Honor Award, the BRAW Amazing Bookshelf, and the Golden Pear Quality Badge.
