Dschinns

(Jinns) Book not yet available in English

Summary:

Hüseyin worked in Germany for thirty years, and now he is finally fulfilling his dream: buying his own apartment in Istanbul. Only to die of a heart attack the day he moves in. His family then embarks on their journey from Germany to attend his funeral. Fatma Aydemir’s great social novel tells the story of six very different people who happen to be related to each other. They all have their own baggage: secrets, desires, wounds. But what unites them is the feeling that someone is watching them in Hüseyin’s apartment. Full of power and beauty, Djinns questions the concept of family, looking deep into the history of past decades and far into the future.

Comment:

“A very, very special book. On the one hand, Aydemir’s narrative is highly reflective, analytical, and clear, and on the other hand, it shows great empathy for each of her characters – there is always a sense of distance and closeness, which is very balanced and very, very expressive. Psychologically highly interesting.” Sylvia Schwab, Deutschlandfunk Büchermarkt, 4 February 2022
