The book addresses the lack of confidence of the young girl character, Vashti, and the effect an adult belief in a girl child can have. Vashti is presented stubborn, reluctant, and angry when she thinks she can’t draw, but her teacher’s suggestion leads to Vashti’s experimentation and growing confidence which is appreciated by others who view her art. This relationship between females is quietly celebrated and shown as sustaining. Vashti eventually passes on this capacity for inspiring others as she helps a boy who finds himself feeling as she once had.
