El placer

(The Pleasure) Book not yet available in English

Summary:

She and he, both very young. Warsaw. Summer. The year is 1990-something. The air is thick as pudding, and the words “love” and “desire” merge into one. It’s not about sex and fleeting pleasure, but about uncertainty and expectation. He craves her feverishly, but she likes to tease him. Pleasure is a love song about passion and attraction so strong that it transcends the boundaries of time and space and creates its own versions of reality. Marta Dzido evokes physicality and the physical experience of love in an unpretentious language that has no parallel in the Czech context.

Comment:

This short novel about love, sex, and the fears of growing up takes readers through the relationship of two young people. Through dynamic language, evocative metaphors, and colorful descriptions of the setting, the author depicts what it was like to grow up in Poland in the 1990s, after the fall of communism and the emergence of capitalism. Against the backdrop of social change, she presents a non-stereotypical view of the complexity of romantic relationships and sexuality in adolescence.
