Summary:
This is the story of an abandoned young girl Luna who was raised by a witch and a swamp monster. The witch accidentally fills Luna with magic powers, and locks the power deep inside Luna to keep her safe. However, now Luna must unlock the magic within her to solve the difficulties that face her.

Comment:
There are strong female role models found throughout this novel. Xan is deemed a witch by the local people, but is revealed to be a kind and wise woman who looks after and protects abandoned children. This subversion the of typical role of the witch, part of the spectrum of how female characters are presented in books for children, is important. When Xan is threatened by the locals who demonise her, Luna must step forward to intervene in the violence that is presented as a solution to perceived threats. The fact that Luna has dark hair and skin is also important in this book that challenges norms of thought and action.
