This coming-of-age story, told through Charlie’s letters, is more honest and intimate than many a diary, while being both funny and bitter. Caught between trying to live his life and trying to run from it, Charlie is attempting to navigate his way through uncharted territory. The intense world of first dates and mix tapes, family dramas and new friends is opening before him. The world of sex, drugs, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, when all one requires is that perfect song on that perfect drive to feel infinite.

This coming of age epistolary novel depicts the lives of teenagers who face fear of rejection in high school and are even being bullied because they do not fit into the restrictive social norms attributed to them. Whether it’s ideas and prejudices about sexual abuse, female sexuality, masculinity and femininity, or homosexuality, the characters’ stories show us that people are more than just stereotypes. Through the main character, Charlie, we also get a very intimate description of mental health issues that stem in part from serious childhood trauma, which he gradually recalls.
